Xaverian Missionaries

St Guido Maria Conforti

Origin and charism

The Spirit of the Lord animates the Church and constantly renews her awareness of her mission in the world. The same spirit inspired Bishop Guido Maria Conforti to dedicate himself to the evangelization of non-Christians, and to gather into one missionary community men called to consecrate their lives to God for the same ideal.

Following our Founder, and reliving the same charism, we Xaverians respond to the Lord’s mandate: «Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation» (Mk 16:15)

St Francis Xavier

Name and Purpose

Saint Francis Xavier is the model and patron of our Institute which bears his name Our foundation name is: «Pia Società di San Francesco Saverio per le Missioni Estere». The sole and exclusive purpose of our Institute is to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom of God to non-Christians.

Elements of Xaverian spirituality

St. Guido Maria Conforti laid the foundation of our life and spirituality on:
  • a personal union with Christ, the missionary of the Father, the centre of our life, the source and inspiration of our thoughts, love and action
  • the apostolate inseparably linked to the evangelical counsels

We express our spirituality through a spirit of:
  • living faith that enables us to «see, love and seek God in all, and intensifies our desire to spread his Kingdom everywhere»
  • ready and generous obedience
  • intense love for the Xaverian family

Apostolic vision

In addition, the Founder wanted his missionaries to possess broad vision, a rich and balanced personality capable of adaptation, and a cultural formation consistent with the demands of our mission.

Faithful to his desire, we cultivate a creative spirit, free from bias and prejudice about people, cultures, ambience and methods of evangelization.

Congregation

Members

Membership of the Institute is acquired through the profession of the evangelical counsels and the vow of mission.

Having been called by the Spirit to live together as a single family, we recognize the diversity of gifts, ministries and cultures as precious resources for a more fitting service to the Gospel.

Structure

The Xaverian Institute is made up of local communities, united in Regions or Delegations, which form a single Xaverian family under the leadership of the General Direction. Structures and roles support the confreres’ vocation and the unity of the Institute so that our apostolic service may be more effective.
