Xaverians in the Philippines

Since 1991

The Philippines is the country with the biggest Catholic population in Asia. While the Evangelization began in 1521 with the arrival of Magellan, the Xaverian Missionaries arrived in the Philippines on January 1991 to open an international theology community in Manila for the training of missionaries for Asia.

The focus of the delegation

Four communities

The Xaverian mission officially began with the foundation of St. Francis Xavier Parish on December 3, 1992. Since then, the focus of the delegation is the formation of future missionaries, vocation promotion, missionary animation, and pastoral ministry. In this line, the delegation has four communities: two houses of formation (Philosophy and Theology) and two parishes.

The International Theology

Missionaries for the World

The Theology house, located in the Diocese of Novaliches, Quezon City, is composed of young Xaverians of different nationalities. In this community young Xaverians learn to adapt to other cultures and work as missionaries in the contexts that are at the margins of the Church. Before starting theological studies at Loyola School of theology, the students have to learn English, the official language of the Philippines. In addition, the learning of Tagalog (National Language) is done during pastoral year and exposure for the activities of the delegation.

Forming Filipino Missionaries

Mission Animation & Vocation Promotion

In 1995, the Xaverians began the missionary animation of the local Church and the training of the young Filipino for missionary life. The Philosophy House, St Francis Xavier Seminary, is in the diocese of Cubao, Quezon City.  Since then, two Filipinos were ordained and sent to the mission in Sierra Leone. There are three Postulants and ten students from different parts of the Philippines who are studying philosophy at St Anthony Mary Claret College.

Pastoral work

Missionaries among Filipinos

To respond to the pastoral training of the formation, the Xaverians founded two parishes: St Francis Xavier Parish, Diocese of Novaliches and Our Lady of Guadalupe, Diocese of Antipolo. The Xaverians assigned in those parishes maintain cordial relation with the local Church and share their missionary identity by life-witness, encourage missionary awareness, and preach that aim to incarnate the Christian message and create new and dynamic communities.
