In our gospel today, Jesus took Peter, James, and John to witness his transfiguration on the mountain. I think Jesus did it for his disciples to realize that he is the light that gives meaning to their lives. Because of the joy of experiencing the glory of Christ, Peter asked Jesus to make three tents in order to stay on the mountain of transfiguration. However, Jesus did not agree with him. He instead ordered him and his brothers to go down the mountain in order to share the good news with their brothers and sisters. In this sense, we are all called to share the good experiences that we usually have with the Lord. Our mission is to be witnesses of Christ in the world. To be a witness of his transfiguration is for all of us Christians who follow Christ through our words and deeds.
To be good followers of Christ, we are invited to reflect on the things we do but are not helpful for our lives. We are challenged to change our attitudes in order to be good Christians. Today’s gospel gives us the inspiration to let ourselves be transfigured in the presence of God. May Christ’s light guide us to become a good example to our brothers and sisters who cannot experience the presence of God in their midst.
In the same gospel, a voice came from heaven saying, “This is my Beloved Son with whom I am well pleased, listen to him”. The voice is from God the Father, who is showing us His Son Jesus as his Son and our perfect Model. The identity of Jesus as the beloved Son of God is also our identity. By our baptism, we were made for sharing in the sonship of Christ. We are the beloved Children of God. We should not forget this message that is our truth. In this Lenten season, we are called to get closer to God every day. We are also called to claim our “belovedness” towards the people who despise us. This should be done through the way we live the Gospel and the way we announce Jesus to those who are still ignoring him.
Looking at our situation today, we are surrounded by many voices: in our places, schools, social media, etc. From the media, we are receiving different kinds of information that sometimes are harmful, and cause damage to our thinking. Let us be more critical of the voices that we are listening to so as to discern if really, they are from God or from other sources. May God grant us his grace so that we may properly listen to his Son all the days of our lives!
