Listening to the Spirit

Lord, thank you for the gift of Your Word
so that all your people may know and love You more
and understand You better.

As I go about my day may I not forget
the scriptures you have opened up for me.

Help me to recognize how You want for me
to apply Your Word to my daily life.

Holy Spirit, guided by Your Word,
may You enlighten my mind
and enkindle in my heart
a greater love for You and for others
in my family and in the world.

Listening to the Word

Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21

Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us, I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received.

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."

Reflection

There’s a story about a man who found a wallet full of cash on the street. Excited, he shared the news with his friends. One said, “You’re lucky! That’s good news!” But another warned, “What if the owner accuses you of stealing it?” Later, the man heard a public announcement about the missing wallet. Returning it to the owner, he was thanked and rewarded generously. The story reminds us how the same event can be seen as good or bad, depending on our perspective.

In today’s readings, we encounter God’s Word as the ultimate Good News, but how we receive it depends on our openness to its message. In the first reading, the Israelites hear the Law and are deeply moved, some even to tears, as they realize how far they’ve drifted from God. Yet, Ezra and Nehemiah encourage them to see it not as a reason for despair but as a source of joy: “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” How often do we interpret God’s Word as something that uplifts us, even when it challenges us?

Similarly, in the Gospel, Jesus declares His mission to bring Good News to the poor, freedom to captives, and healing to the broken. Yet, some who heard Him were skeptical. They saw Him as “just Joseph’s son” and struggled to believe. This raises an important question: How do we perceive God’s message in our own lives? Do we see it as a source of hope and renewal, or do we resist it because it disrupts our comfort or expectations?

Both readings invite us to reflect on how we welcome the Word of God into our hearts. When life feels difficult, do we turn to Scripture as a source of guidance and strength? When we are challenged to grow or change, do we see it as an opportunity for transformation? Like the people in Nehemiah’s time and those in the synagogue with Jesus, we are called to listen deeply and interpret God’s message as Good News that brings joy, even in challenging circumstances.

As we celebrate the Sunday of the Word of God and National Bible Sunday, let us take time to reflect: How do I approach God’s Word? Do I allow it to shape my life with joy and hope? Am I willing to share the Good News with others, even when it requires courage? Like the story of the wallet, the meaning we draw from God’s message often depends on our attitude and faith. May we always choose to see His Word as the Good News that renews, strengthens, and fills our lives with joy.
