KUNG SAAN KA MASAYA… O KUNG SAAN KA MAGALAK?

Listening to the Spirit

O God of joy and hope,
on this Gaudete Sunday You call us to rejoice,
not in the passing comforts of the world
but in the saving presence of Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Open our hearts to recognize the true source of joy—
the certainty that You are with us, guiding us, loving us,
and leading us into the fullness of life.

As we light the rose candle of our Advent wreath,
fill us with the light of Your grace.
Calm our worries, strengthen our faith,
and teach us to rejoice even in moments of difficulty,
just as Mary rejoiced in Your promise
and John the Baptist proclaimed Your coming with courage.

May this celebration draw us closer to You
and help us prepare our hearts for the birth of Your Son.
Grant us the gift of deep, abiding joy
that no one and nothing can take away.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Listening to the Word

Matthew 11:2-11

When John the Baptist heard in prison of the works of the Christ, he sent his disciples to Jesus with this question, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” Jesus said to them in reply, “Go and tell John of what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.”

As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces. Then why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you. Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”

Reflection

Masaya ka ba sa buhay mo? O nalulungkot ka? These are the questions a retreat master once asked his retreatants. Today is Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete means “be joyful” or “be happy,” and in Tagalog it means “Magalak.” The Catholic Church invites us today to experience real joy. John the Baptist was asked, “What shall we do?” This can also be our question today: “What shall I do to be happy?”

These questions lead us to reflect more deeply on what true joy really means, and so I would like to offer three points for our meditation. Here are three points I would like to share concerning Joy (Kagalakan) and Happiness (Kasiyahan):

1. Ang galak ay hindi saya.

Joy is not happiness. Joy is much deeper than happiness. Happiness often depends on what is happening around us—our environment, our situation, or our mood. But joy does not depend on what is happening around us. Joy comes from the deep knowledge that I am a friend of Christ.

2. Ang galak ay higit sa saya.

Joy is greater than happiness. Joy includes happiness, but it is far greater. Joy aims for what is good, true, and beautiful. Sometimes we hear in Tagalog, “Kung saan ka masaya, gawin mo iyon.” But this can be dangerous. Some snatchers are “happy” when they steal. Some drunkards feel “happy” when they get drunk. But that kind of happiness is shallow. Ang galak ay higit sa saya. Ang pangarapin natin ay hindi lamang saya kundi galak na Diyos lamang ang makapagbibigay.

3. May galak kahit walang saya.

There is joy even when there is no happiness. Look at Mary during the Annunciation. The angel Gabriel greeted her: “Rejoice, Mary!” After the Annunciation, the angel left her. Not everything that would happen to Mary afterward would be pleasant, easy, or comfortable. She would go through many trials as the Mother of God. Yet despite all these imperfect and painful events, Mary remained joyful. She could still say: “My soul glorifies the Lord.” May galak kahit walang saya because real joy comes from the certainty that God is always with us.

Malungkot ka ba? Masaya ka ba? Do not worry. Continue to seek God, and you will find real joy — joy that the world cannot take away.
