Let nothing to get in the way as we follow the Lord
Listening to the Spirit
Come Holy Spirit, fill the heart of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth.
Amen
Listening to the Word
“I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled! I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how I am constrained until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division; for henceforth in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
Reflection
“Let nothing to get in the way as we follow the Lord.”
Since two weeks ago we have been inviting to recognize many kinds of barrier that protect us to follow the will of God in our lives. The first barrier is 'treasures.' It can bring us far away from God if the focus is only on our own lives and not about the plan of God. The second barrier is the way of thinking regarding the second coming of the Lord. Many people don’t want to think about death and at the same time, they are afraid of death because they said that they are not ready. The Lord reminds us to keep vigilance by doing what is pleasing to the Master. The third barrier is the act of compromise with the situation or the people around us by putting aside the will of God. As we heard in the first reading of today. The king lets the people do what they want to do just to avoid the tension between them and to please them by following their plans.
We are invited to learn from Jesus how he is eager to do the will of the Father than to please the people around Him. The eagerness of Jesus was depicted as a fire that He himself intended to be burning also in the heart of every people to follow the will of God. Three steps that we have to do in order to be burned as Jesus are: denying ourselves, carrying our cross, and following Him.
Let us do our best to remove all the barriers that are in front of us so that we will be able to follow the Lord and His will in our lives.
