What happens if you come across a beggar on the street, then you realize that the beggar is your father or someone you love? You could pass by and pay no attention at all, but while recognizing him/her as someone you love, the reaction will be different. Love brings us to do extraordinary things and go beyond our biases and prejudices.

The Gospel speaks about the greatest commandment of love to God and the neighbor. A direct question caused a direct response: One of the scribes approached Jesus and asked, "What is the first of all the commandments?" Jesus replied, "The first is: Listen, Israel: The Lord our God is the only Lord; you will love the Lord your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these."

Jesus summarized the law by identifying its core and essence: it is love to God and the neighbor. It is good to keep in mind Jesus’ concise language because, in a world full of facades and masks, it is easy to get used to excusing everything or justifying everything forgetting what matters. Love must be a priority for Christians as it should characterize all we do.

We cannot lose the fundamental word in Jesus Christ's response: LOVE. To love our neighbors is a response to God’s love; let’s have in mind that God loves us first and our response is to love Him back which is also manifested in the love to our neighbors.
