This day is the first Sunday of Advent and it falls on the first day of December. By Advent we understand the preparation for the feast of Christmas, which is the coming of Christ in history. At the same time, we anticipate Jesus coming in glory, which is called Parousia. But since we don’t know the time and hour, today’s gospel gives us some clues “There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” These signs prior to Christ’s coming are frightening. That’s why the Lord advises us to act with hope, vigilance, and prayer in order to receive the promise of salivation.

The Power of Hope

"Stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand." These words are a call to look up, not in despair, but in hope. The return of the Son of Man will be a moment of great joy for those who have remained faithful. It will be the moment of our redemption, the moment when all things are made right, when justice is restored, and when we are fully united with Christ in His glory.

How often do we forget the power of this hope? In the trials and difficulties of life, we can easily focus on the present moment and forget the glorious future that awaits us. Jesus reminds us today that, no matter how dark or uncertain the world may seem, we are not to give in to despair. Our salvation is near! As we struggle with our own personal challenges, we are to lift our eyes to the horizon of God’s promises. We are called to live in the light of the knowledge that our salvation is at hand.

The Call to Vigilance

Jesus warns, “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life.” At the heart of this passage is the message of vigilance. How easy it is for our hearts to grow weary and distracted! The world offers many temptations, and we are often caught up in the pursuit of comfort, pleasure, or the constant worries of life. In this hustle it is so easy to lose sight of the eternal perspective when we get caught up between what is and what is not yet. But Jesus cautions us that these distractions can dull our spiritual senses, preventing us from being prepared for the day of His coming.

We live in a world where the cares of life can overwhelm us. Bills to pay, work deadlines, family responsibilities, and the relentless news cycle of violence and war which make us feel like it is the end of the world. Yes, the day of the Lord will come unexpectedly, like a trap. But we are called to be awake, alert, and aware of the signs that God is at work in our world.

The Importance of Prayer

Jesus tells us, "Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man." Prayer is essential in our vigilance. It is through prayer that we find the strength to endure, the grace to persevere, and the courage to live out our calling as disciples of Christ. Prayer keeps us connected to God, it keeps our hearts focused on His will, and it gives us the fortitude to face the trials of life without being overwhelmed by them. By constantly turning to God in prayer, especially during this time of Advent, we place our trust in Him again and again, knowing that His grace will sustain us in all things.

In closing, my dear brothers and sisters, let us stand erect and raise our heads, assured that our redemption is at hand. Let us be vigilant, filled with hope, and faithful in prayer. May the Lord bless us in this season of advent, with the grace to live in joyful anticipation of His coming, and may we always be ready to stand before the Son of Man with hearts full of faith, hope, and love.
