Mgr. Vitus Rubianto Solichin, s.x., Bishop of the Diocese of Padang

This October 7 2021 which is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary we were graced by the Lord that one of our confreres was ordained as a Bishop of the Diocese of Padang in Indonesia. His name is Mgr. Vitus Rubianto Solichin, s.x. He continues the service of Mgr. Martinus Dogma Situmorang who is the former Bishop in the Diocese of Padang.

Before he was appointed as a Bishop, Mgr. Vitus was teaching Biblical Courses in STF Driyarkara. At the same time, he was serving as the superior or formator for the Xaverian Philosophy brothers in Cempaka Putih. His calling as a missionary, preacher, and teacher has brought him to greater services and responsibilities as a Bishop in the Diocese of Padang.

Bishop Vitus has chosen the motto, Misericordia Motus (i.e., Moved by compassion), because he wants to let himself to be guided by Jesus who always helped people out of love and compassion. His vision is to show God's wondrous love to the people whom he is serving.

Here is a brief description of the logo of Mgr. Vitus Rubianto Solichin, Bishop of Padang.

The coat of arms of Bishop Vitus Rubianto Solichin is a shield that is divided into three parts: two parts above, left and right, & a large part below.

At the top left, on a red background, is the Bible, his area of ​​study interest. Proclaiming the good news & fostering the lives of the faithful based on the Word of God has always been his concern.

At the top right, on a yellow background, is a red crab and a brown cross. The story of the crab & the cross is part of the story of the missionary journey of St. Francis Xavier in the Moluccas. Bishop Vitus is a missionary of the Xaverian Society.

At the bottom of the shield, against a blue background, there are several symbols. In the upper left there is a yellow six-pointed star, which together with the blue sea below is Stella Maris or the Star of the Ocean, one of the titles of Our Lady. Three waves, symbolizing the ocean that connects Sumatra with the surrounding islands. On the waves there is a Mentawai boat, which reminds the bishop of the beautiful island where he for the first time carried out his missionary duties. On this boat there is a mother pelican with three small children. This mother pelican looks bloody, after she gives her own flesh and blood to feed her young. This pelican is a symbol of Christ.

On top of the shield is placed a galero or clerical distinctive green hat, with 6 tassels on each side. In the center of the back of the shield is a golden yellow stake cross. The green galero with 6 tassels along with this stake is a sign that the owner of the coat of arms is a bishop.

Finally, at the bottom of the shield is a golden yellow band, bearing the Latin motto of Bishop Vitus' shepherding: "Misericordia Motus", meaning "He was moved with compassion" (Luke 15:20). Thus, the Church is invited to bring forth the face of a merciful Father.
