In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus speaks of Himself as both the gate and the shepherd who leads the sheep. Each one of us has a different name given by our parents. When our parents call us, we immediately recognize that the voice is theirs. But when someone calls us by name and that person is a stranger, we tend to doubt who is calling us. Even if they know our name, the voice is different, and we recognize that difference.
Connecting this experience to our Gospel this Sunday, we are reminded that even with so many voices in the world, we can still recognize the voice that is familiar to us, the voice of the Good Shepherd who leads us to holiness. There are many voices: the voice of the unborn child, the voices of people seeking justice, the voices of citizens crying out for peace, and the voices of those protesting against corrupt leaders. But which voice truly brings us hope, peace, and joy despite all these worldly voices?
Only one, the voice that comes from God. It is the voice of the Shepherd who leads His sheep to the gate of comfort when we feel hopeless in this world. He is not absent, we simply need to pause and make time for God in order to hear His voice. God always listens to our cries. Even if they are only whispers, if our hearts are willing to listen, we can feel His presence, because God is everywhere. His voice is not always the loudest, but it is the one that brings peace, clarity, and direction.
My dear brothers and sisters, this is the heart of my reflection: God’s voice is not always found in happy moments, and it often comes in the midst of noise and struggle. But like the sheep in the Gospel, we are invited to listen closely and follow with trust. My own experience is a reminder that even when the world is full of voices, the Shepherd continues to lead, and His voice can still be heard by those who seek Him.
As we reflect today, we are invited to ask: Am I listening for His voice? Am I willing to follow where He leads?
