Missionary life is beautiful, but it is also challenging. This is what our formator used to tell us. I am sharing this because, in the Gospel of Matthew, what struck me most was when Jesus told His apostles: “Teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
The mission of the apostles was not easy. Jesus asked them to teach people how to live according to God’s will. He taught them to love others, help the poor, forgive people, and remain faithful to God. This is why missionary life is both challenging and beautiful. Missionaries are not only sent to far places; they are also called to bring people back to God in a world full of distractions. Today, the mission is to remind people that true happiness cannot be found only in social media or worldly things, but in having a deep relationship with God.
I am sharing this because we are about to enter a new chapter in our lives. Together with Gabriel, we will be going to Indonesia, where we will come out of our comfort zone. We will go to another country, experience a different culture, meet new people, and live far away from our families. Honestly, leaving our comfort zone is not easy. There are many questions in our minds: Will we be able to adjust to the culture? Can we communicate well with the people? Will we be strong enough to face homesickness, challenges, and struggles during our formation?
These thoughts sometimes make me feel nervous and doubtful. Yet, this Gospel reminds me that mission is not about relying only on our own strength. Jesus knew that His apostles would face hardships and fears when they went on their mission, but He comforted them with His promise that He would always be with them. In the same way, I believe that Jesus is also with us as we prepare for our mission in Indonesia, and not only in Indonesia, but also in our future missions. Even if we are far from our families and our home, we are never far from God.
Brothers and sisters, the Gospel reminds us that God is always with us, no matter where we are or what challenges we face in life. There may be moments when we feel afraid, uncertain, and weak. Yet Jesus assures us in the Gospel that we are never alone because His presence continues to guide, strengthen, and comfort us.
Just as the apostles faced difficulties in fulfilling their mission, we too may experience struggles and doubts, but God remains faithful to us. His promise gives us courage to continue our journey with trust and hope. Therefore, as we face the challenges of mission and life, may we always remember that God walks with us every step of the way, leading us closer to Him and helping us become instruments of His love for others.
