Let Us Pray...

| Bro. Michael Thimoty Sandi Pratama Fenat, sx

"Dear brothers and sisters, the next few months will lead us to the opening of the Holy Door, with which we will begin the Jubilee. I ask you to intensify your prayers in order to prepare ourselves to live this event of grace well, and to experience the strength of God’s hope. Therefore, today we begin the Year of Prayer; that is, a year dedicated to rediscovering the great value and absolute need for prayer in personal life, in the life of the Church, and in the world." (Pope Francis, Angelus on Sunday, January 21, 2024)

On January 21, Pope Francis announced that this year would be a year of prayer. All Christians must think that I am already praying, even being a prayer warrior for others. Of course, many pray but need to reflect on the meaning of prayer itself. Through his invitation, Pope Francis invites us to pray, step back, and look at reality. This reflection asks us to be part of the prayer itself. So, this article will cover the meaning of prayer and its importance for us.

The word "pray" has a few different but related meanings, such as speaking or communicating with a god, typically to make requests or express thanks. For example, someone might pray to ask their god for help, guidance, or blessings. This often involves kneeling, closing the eyes, folding the hands, or reciting particular words or texts. Conversely, prayer means to ask someone for something earnestly desired. For example, "She prayed for mercy from the judge" or "I pray you will reconsider your decision." This uses "pray" figuratively rather than praying to a god. Some believe prayer means making an earnest wish or requesting a particular outcome. For example, "We pray for good weather on vacation next week." This suggests hoping very profoundly and fervently.

So, in essence, to pray is to ask, request earnestly, or wish for something from a god or other people, typically something vital that you deeply desire to happen or want assistance with achieving. It conveys a sense of solemn, sacred wishing and asking.

The Meaning of Prayer

Why should I pray? This simple question is sometimes confusing, but it also invites one to reflect on the meaning of prayer itself. From my experience, prayer has helped me get closer to God. Many people pray because it connects them spiritually, whether to a god, a higher power, or a sense of the sacred. Prayer allows them to transcend the material world. People often pray to ask God or their higher power for something, such as health, strength, guidance, prosperity, etc. They pray, believing that God can intervene or help them fulfill their prayers. Some of us also experience that prayer is used to give thanks for what a person already has and the blessings in their life. And people pray to praise and appreciate God or their higher power.

On the other hand, the act of praying can be meditative. The repetition, breathing, and mental focus in prayer induce tranquility. By continually praying to a deity, many feel they are reaffirming and strengthening their faith and belief system. In this sense, prayer is not only about personal intention but also about community life. Praying as a collective group, such as in many congregations, helps bond the community through their shared faith. Because it was taught from a young age, many people pray simply because they were instructed to do so at a young age by family or their community, not necessarily knowing all the reasons behind it.

Getting Closer to God

In conclusion, prayer has been significant across human history, cultures, and faith traditions. Despite differences in religious beliefs, prayer represents a common thread - a way for individuals and communities to connect with the divine, find inner peace or guidance, and express gratitude.

Prayer draws on several aspects of the human experience - our ability to focus mentally and emotionally, be conscious of a power beyond ourselves, and communicate through words, songs, physical gestures, or even silent intention. Through these means, prayer provides a conduit to the sacred that grounds and uplifts.

Prayers come in endless forms, from the elaborate rituals of the world's great faiths to the whisper before bedtime. Regardless of the prayer's scale or tradition, human beings perform this act to align themselves with divine will, understand their place in the cosmos, and infuse their lives with a sense of the hallowed.

The practice of prayer endures even in an increasingly busy and secular world because it meets a complex range of human needs. Beyond its religious purposes, prayer provides psychological benefits like reduced anxiety and increased gratitude and connectivity. Its persistence across eras, cultures, and individuals reveals an innate human yearning to communicate into that quiet, listening void - where we hope some fabulous and merciful presence resides.
